Why do we Celebrate?
The celebration of mothers is a tradition as old as time itself. Okay, maybe not that old, but definitely dating back to ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals in honor of mother goddesses. The significance of Mother’s Day and the importance of giving flowers ranges from culture to culture.
Mothers around the World
The tradition in the US is derived from the UK where Mother’s Day took after a religious holiday. Traditionally, the children would pick flowers and bake special cakes in honor of their mothers. My family always got flowers from a shop, signed cards, and spent the afternoon baking with our mother, creating special memories while celebrating the day.
Fun fact for nowadays, more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. Phone traffic spikes by as much as 37 percent on Mother’s day every year!
In Brazil Mother’s Day is one of the most commercial holidays of the year! Second only to Christmas (mind blown!). The giving of gifts and flowers is a rich tradition, but of course, it wouldn’t be a party without barbecuing for the whole family!
Japan, a country known for holding their mothers in high esteem, celebrate this day with red roses or carnations, a special dinner, and tending to their mother’s every need so she may have a day of relaxation. Generally, the children do small projects for their mothers such as make a card or paint a picture.
Though not an official holiday until declared so by Napoleon in the 1950’s and much like their neighbors in the UK, Mother’s Day in France is and was celebrated with family giving bouquets of flowers found locally such as lavender, lilies, irises, and a special meal that mom didn’t have to slave away at and simply got to enjoy.
Out of all the many traditions that revolve around Mother’s Day, one thing is constant – the importance of showing the woman who has cared for us as children and into adulthood, how important she is.
