It's not that you NEED to have a theme, but by having one, your wedding planning process is much easier and organized. If you don't have a theme, your wedding can end up looking "lost" and unorganized, which you wouldn't want. It's much easier to get off track if you don't have a theme to stick to – you could having something beach themed, something garden themed, something Asian themed, etc. all in the same wedding which is going to look silly when put all together.
